About

Vexnot Studio is a home for knitwear and patterns designed by Hollis in San Francisco, California.

Pieces available for purchase are created by hand using a variety of natural and artificial materials sourced primarily from local yarn stores.

Patterns go through a rigorous testing process before release day, and great care and effort are put into creating designs that are size-inclusive and substitution-friendly.

Patterns

Patterns are priced to reflect the many hours of design and testing labor necessary to publish. Once purchased, an email with a download link will be sent to the email you provided. Each pattern includes introduction, materials, sizing, and construction sections. Social media hashtags are included to help you find other makers and draw inspiration!

Sizing

All patterns are written to accommodate US sizes XS-5XL. To help creators identify the correct size, each pattern includes dimensions for sizes ‘A-I’ that correspond to the circumference of the largest part of your bust. Each pattern will include, generally speaking, width, height, and sleeve-opening measurements, all corresponding to a range of bust sizes within the ‘A-I’ categories.

One of the greatest aspects to hand-knitting your own clothing is that you get to make it exactly how YOU want it to fit. By tailoring each make to your bust circumference (among other things), rather than defaulting to thinking “I’m always a medium!” you give yourself a better chance at making the best fit for you!

Care instructions

Vexnot Studio pieces may look delicate, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t wear the heck out of them! As a general rule, pieces are sturdy in construction and are most vulnerable to damage due to snagging or when they are being cleaned. Wash your knits only if they are smelly or you spill something on them (washing the pieces can shorten their life-span if done incorrectly). Following these general guidelines will ensure your knits last the test of time:

Wool, Mohair, & Silk Blends: hand-wash pieces containing any amount of wool, mohair, and/or silk in cold water with a wool-safe detergent. Do NOT put pieces made with wool or silk blends in the dryer; this will murder them. Washing machines are also NOT a good idea, as this can result in damage. Lay these pieces flat to dry, and use a hair dryer on a low-heat setting to speed up the drying process.

Cotton & Bamboo: pieces made entirely out of cotton and/or bamboo are safe to run through a washing machine on a cold water cycle using a gentle detergent (nothing with bleach, even color-safe bleach). Lay these pieces flat to dry, and use a hair dryer on a low-heat setting to speed up the drying process.

Acrylic & Nylon: pieces made with acrylic and nylon blends are safe to run through a washing machine on a cold water cycle using a gentle detergent (nothing with bleach, even color-safe bleach). In a pinch, these pieces can tumble dry on a low-heat or touch-up setting in a dryer, but this is not recommended. The safest path is to lay them flat to dry, and use a hair dryer on a low-heat setting to speed up the drying process.

materials

& labor

Pricing reflects the value of the materials used to create each piece as well as the time spent creating them! The description of each piece contains materials & labor details specific to that creation, but in general, natural materials are more expensive than artificial materials, and Hollis pays herself a living wage ($12/hour) for each hour spent creating Vexnot Studio pieces. Vexnot Studio is the opposite of fast-fashion, and materials and labor information are provided to communicate the true cost of creating each piece. Thank you for your support!
