Hot Topic No. 1

review of the hue loco ‘at the disco’ collection

Or, how a loyal disciple of the House of Hue Loco has officially peaked and can close up her shop and go home now.

Full Disclosure Part One: I was gifted the yarn I’m reviewing today, which is open for preorder here until the end of May. Full Disclosure Part Two: Hue Loco is run by Nicole, who is an indie dyer-slash-baddie-slash-genius, and I am but a humble peasant who has bought so much Hue Loco yarn that I actually am not going to tell you how much money I’ve spent. Do with those disclosures what you will.

I discovered Hue Loco last fall at my LYS (‘local yarn store’ for blog hotties in the Know, which is now you) and I’ve been inhaling as much of it as I can afford ever since. When Hue Loco offered me the chance to review their latest collection I cried on the inside like a Big Girl and then emailed back a frantic-but-professional YES.

Full Disclosure Part Three: My name is Hollis, and I’m a tonals girlie. As such, I will say only that my heart has expanded to hold enough love for all the children in this collection, but I see myself the most in the tonals (‘Funk Me Up,’ ‘The Lowdown,’ and ‘Boogie Time’). I feel this is an appropriate time to….

Full Disclosure Part Four: In addition to the single skein of the tonal ‘Boogie Time’ that I was gifted, I’ve ordered three more to make my fiance a sweater. Look at that! My heart has expanded once more, to accommodate the truckload of love required to knit someone else a sweater and then also watch them wear it and eventually spill something on it or snag a bunch of stitches on a set of car keys (in sickness and in HEALTH, is what I’m told I’ve agreed to).

Now we move to the part of the review where I no longer know what I’m doing, aka Semi-Solids & Speckles. Full Disclosure Part Five: I’m biased against speckle colorways (there’s always a lot going on with speckle skeins and I create enough mental and emotional chaos to keep my life spicy all by myself, thank you very much). However, for some reason the ‘Good Vibes Only’ speckle colorway is giving me…. good vibes. Idk if manifesting is like real or whatever but that’s as good an example as I’ve ever come across. As a reward for myself for having a Growth Mindset and being Open to New Experiences, I’ve ordered enough worsted-weight ‘Good Vibes Only’ to make myself a sweater that I can spill my own drinks on. Don’t worry, the spicy DK-weight speckle and semi-solid colorways I was gifted here are going to come together to make a kick-ass ‘Marble Sweater’ (pattern by Petite Knit) inspired by the genius version Wool and Works debuted on Instagram a week ago.

This partnership has been one of those experiences that makes me think back to when I started knitting with a beginner We Are Knitters kit while the Panorama was scaring the pants off everyone (literally and figuratively). I’m not going to spout some bs like sOmEThiNg gOod came out of all that nonsense but… it strikes a chord in me nonetheless. The most interesting paths I’ve taken in life tend to start with someone (or something) asking me, ‘wanna try this?’ and me saying, ‘sure, I’ve been looking for an excuse to procrastinate this other thing I don’t wanna do anyway.’

[Awkard non-transition-transition] You can find the full collection here until the end of May, and you can use the VEXNOT10 discount code to get 10% off as a thank you for making it all the way through this review. Catch you next time, hotties!
